Danny Boyle's ‘Slumdog Millonaire’ continues it's successful journey in the run up to the mother of all award ceremonies, the Academy Awards, the latest in it's overflowing kitty being the top honour from the Directors Guild of America.
Along with winning plaudits at award functions, the film has also been raking in moolah at the box office thanks to it's Oscar hype.
‘Slumdog Millionaire’ has earned a whopping USD 67,244,000 in its 12 week run in the US with a average earning of USD 4,703 per theatre according to a movie website.
The film, which has been nominated for 10 Oscars also swept the Golden Globes where it won the awards in all four categories that it was nominated in, including the "Best Drama".
With a long list of honours to boot, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ has emerged as the top contender for this year's Academy Awards.
And the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film is considered an accurate indicator of the Oscar winner in the same category as 55 of the 60 past DGA award winners went on to win the Academy Award.
Danny Boyle won his first DGA award for the film that chronicles the eventful life of a street urchin from the slums of Mumbai who participates in India's version of 'Who wants to be a Millionaire' to win over his childhood sweet heart.
The film like it's protagonist was an underdog, which has surprised the world with it's astounding sauces. Made on a shoestring budget and with unknown actors the film is competing with the other Oscar big weights like Sean Penn's ‘Milk’ and Brad Pitt starrer ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’.
‘Slumdog Millionaire’ has till date won the top prize for best film from the Directors Guild of America, Screen Actors Guild, Producers Guild of America, Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards.
The film, meanwhile, has got a lukewarm response from the domestic box office in India and has also drawn flak from some quarter's for a cliched and lopsided depiction of the city of Mumbai.
